Music That Teaches is dedicated to the concept that music
enhances learning by activating
students mentally, physically and emotionally. By presenting a subject, any subject, in a musical framework,
we create learning states which enhance understanding as well as retention.
Music That Teaches is the result
of the creative collaboration between brothers Dave and Dan Kimber. Both men grew up in Southern California
where upon graduation their careers took them in different directions. Dave followed his musical talent while
Dan pursued a literary and teaching career.
Dave's early career path included
being a recording artist for MGM, composing and performing with such artists as
Elton John, Joni Mitchell and Frank Zappa. Later he moved to Australia where he wrote music, television
themes and served as music director for Channel 7 in Sydney. Upon returning to the U S Dave
completed his teaching degree and masters degree in education. Dave now has over 10 years of teaching
experience as a 5th grade social studies teacher in Flint, Michigan
where he has used his music and education background to create teaching
strategies that enhance the learning process and improve retention.
Dan Kimber has been teaching in
Southern California for over 30 years.
This valuable teaching experience includes 6 years at the elementary
level, 6 years at a junior high school and 20 plus years teaching high
school. Dan has co-authored 3
books as well as a nationally syndicated column, "Living and Loving" with
best-selling author, Leo Buscaglia.
Dan now writes a column for the L.A. Times entitled "Education Matters". Named "Teacher of the Year" over 10
times in his teaching career, Dan
currently teaches Advanced Placement U.S. History where he has found music to
be an indispensable supplement to his teaching efforts.
As the career paths of Dave and
Dan Kimber began to parallel each other, it wasn't long before a professional
collaboration began to take place and Music That Teaches was born producing a
series of products based on solid instructional practices built around learning
through music. Field tested and
refined by these two dedicated and talented teachers Music That Teaches
provides teaching strategies that can be used in any classroom without
necessitating a music background on the part of the teacher.
Concrete results were immediately
apparent as both brothers cited measurable increased learning and
retention. As these positive
results became known, surrounding schools began to adopt the Music That Teaches
approach. To read about some of these success stories and other advocates of
