Get on the bus! Join TeachRock and the NYC Department of Education's Office of Social Studies and Civics for a full day of professional learning dedicated to the Grateful Dead. Investigate how music can serve as a primary source for teaching US History, explore the band's cultural legacy, and discover how their story opens a powerful entry point for teaching about disability. This session is part of the Rock and Roll Classroom Professional Learning Series 2025–2026.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed for NYCDOE educators in Grades 6–12, including teachers, instructional leads, and administrators who want to bring more depth, engagement, and relevance to their history and humanities classrooms.

What You'll Walk Away With

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Apply Music as Primary Source pedagogy to US History instruction
  • Use Grateful Dead-centered lessons to explore themes of counterculture, community, and American identity
  • Integrate disability studies into their humanities curriculum using music as an entry point
  • Access ready-to-use lesson plans and materials aligned to NYCDOE Social Studies standards

Continuing Education Credit Eligibility

Participants will receive a certificate of attendance documenting five CTLE hours upon completion of this workshop.
